The cathedral of the gentle Queen of Heaven relegates the Last Judgment to the S transept. The 2000 sculpted figures on the exterior of Chartres constitute a comprehensive and coherent Christology.

Xt's nativity, presentation in temple, & in glory with Mary in heaven. An argument in stone to support William of Thierry's (chancellor of the Cathedral School of Chartres) refutation of Berengar ;& Henry of Lausanne; who denied Christ was fully human, & present in the Eucharist. In the tympanum the Christchild is lying on an altar-like crib (Eucharist on an altar), and he is on a little altar in the Presentation scene.

In the outer rim of the tympanum are figures representing the seven Liberal Arts, and famous Greek and Roman thinkers who gave us he liberal arts. On the bottom, right, is Donatus the grammarian, & above him is Grammar (woman teaching two young boy); facing Donatus is Pythagoras working out his discovery of musical intervals. Above him is Music. On the left outer rim, bottom, is Aristotle, and above him Philosophy. The Cathedral School of Chartres was a famous center of Liberal Arts study, in this 12th & 13th century renaissance.

Laon Cathedral, Notre Dame. Seen from below the bluff on which he city stands. Much fought over in WWI and WWII. One of the earliest cathedrals, 1160-1205.

Laon, W front. Towers have sculptured oxen projecting from their edges, commemorating the oxen who pulled up the hill the loads of stone to build the cathedral.
